Series Director: Christopher Symons
This season (2009-2010) is the twentieth anniversary of its founding in 1989 - and how much has happened since then! The series has brought to Oswestry some of the world's greatest performers: pianists Lill, Brendel, Hamelin, Roscoe; the Lindsay, Skampa, Royal, Coull and Allegri string quartets; Tasmin Little, Richard Baker, Stephen Varcoe, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the London Mozart Players, the City of London Sinfonia and many more. The list is long, distinguished and remarkable for so small a place. As befits an anniversary, the new season will be a real celebration of music: five concerts featuring names of national and international renown rounded off with a celebratory 20th Season Variety night of fun.
To open the season in September, the Tallis Scholars with their director, Peter Phillips, will enable us to hear some of the finest music from the Renaissance period - including the haunting Allegri Miserere - sung by possibly the most renowned exponents in the field. Then, in October, we will hear the remarkable Pavel Haas String Quartet from Prague, one of the finest young quartets on the international scene.
Following the marvellous reception for their two piano recital in 2007, Martin Roscoe and Christopher Symons will make a return appearance, playing some of the greatest works in the repertoire - including Ravel's exciting La Valse. Then we welcome the prodigiously talented pianist Freddy Kempf, whose programme will include Bach's masterpiece: the Goldberg Variations.
The final planned concert will bring yet another fine orchestra - the Manchester Camerata - with pianist Kathryn Stott in Mozart's D minor K466 Concerto. Then in late June, to celebrate the ending of another enjoyable season, and twentieth anniversary, there will be a special evening of total musical enjoyment and fun - a Variety Night, with wine, candlelight and sweet music. Details will appear later.
