School Development

The ongoing programme of development and improvement of the Oswestry School site has continued with the opening of a new classroom block and the refurbishing of Ludlow and Powis dormitories in School House.

    The Tilley Building

The new classrooms were built with the help of a legacy from Mr John Tilley, a former pupil of Oswestry School (1935-43) and a much-admired and respected teacher at the school for 41 years, from 1946 until he retired in 1987. He maintained close connections with the school until his death in 2005. They were formally opened by Canon John Edge, a close friend of John Tilley, on Founder's Day 2008.

The Tilley Building takes the form of two blocks, comprising six classrooms, offices and storage rooms. They are used for teaching maths, English as an additional language and PE. Erected by the Shawbury-based company Built OffSite Ltd, the buildings were assembled at the firm’s construction site, transported to the school and lowered on to the foundations by crane. Fixtures and fittings were then installed. All the teaching rooms have interactive whiteboards and are connected to the school computer network.

    Ludlow and Powis Dormitories

Ludlow and Powis dormitories in School House have been transformed. The old dormitories have been replaced by 4-bed and 2-bed comfortable rooms, each with wash-hand basins, individual LAN connections and modern purpose-built furniture.  All facilities comply with the current Health and Safety regulations.

The improvements to the dormitories, which were completed in two phases (each of about 10 weeks of work time by school maintenance staff and external builders), have been a great success. The rooms having now been completed and furnished, the students have moved in and voted their new term-time homes a great improvement.
