Music Activities

Learn an Instrument

Over half of the pupils choose to learn an instrument within the school's instrumental teaching programme.

You may learn the following instruments - piano, cello, double bass, flute, violin, viola, clarinet, saxophone (soprano, alto, tenor or baritone), guitar (classical, electric or bass), trumpet, cornet, trombone, E♭horn, French horn, vocal studies, percussion and drum kit.  If you would like to learn an instrument that isn't included here, please ask.  The music department is always happy to try to make the necessary arrangements.

Lessons are of 35 minutes duration and are incorporated into the school day.  They operate on a rotational basis so that a different lesson is missed each week.  There is a charge of £13.50 per lesson which is added to the termly bill.  Pupils learning more than one instrument may be able to have one of these lessons at a fixed time.

Different rates apply where peripatetic staff are self employed.

Students may be entered for the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music, Trinity/Guildhall Music Examinations upon the recommendation of their tutor (and with the agreement of their parents).

Lunchtime Activities

At no extra cost, some of our teachers run lunchtime groups, which enable students to enjoy playing together and to develop broader musicianship skills.  When students (of suitable instruments) are ready they join the school orchestra, concert band and other ensembles.  Assemblies, lunch-time recitals and evening concerts give our musicians many performance opportunities; most of the music activities at Oswestry School take place during lunchtime to give everyone (especially those who have to travel long distances) a chance to join in.

Learn Theory

Mrs Morris also runs a theory class one evening a week.  This is primarily for pupils who wish to study for Grade V Theory (and beyond) but any pupils are welcome to attend.

Musical Events and Productions

Oswestry School has many music events throughout the year which include Harvest Festival and Founder's Day services, the Lower School Nativity Play/Carol Service, the Christmas Concert, the Carol Service, House Music Competition, Musical Production rehearsals, Town Concert, Oswestry Youth Music Festival, Musical Production and Summer Concert.

Musical productions are staged once a year; past productions have included 'Guys and Dolls', 'Hansel and Gretel', 'Fiddler on the Roof' and 'The Sound of Music' with Wednesday afternoons, 3.50pm-5.15pm, usually set aside for rehearsals.

Charity Concerts

As well as these fixed events, school musicians often contribute entertainment for charitable causes (Hope House, League of Friends Orthopaedic Hospital, Peace Child Wales) and take part in music festivals/workshops etc with other schools.  There is at least one annual music workshop day for Bellan House, Years 3 and 4, and Lower School pupils.
