Fencing victory for Eleanor

A 12-year-old pupil at Oswestry School has taken top national honours in a fencing competition held in Cardiff.

Eleanor Regnart-Butler was competing in the Welsh Youth Foil at the Welsh Institute of Sport.

After the initial pool in which Eleanor had six matches, she was in second position and made her way through the direct eliminations to the final.

Playing against an opponent who had beaten her earlier in the day, Eleanor went on to win the competition 10-2.

She is now preparing for the British Youth Championship Qualifiers which take place in Cardiff on February 25 and 26.

Oswestry School’s Director of Sport Darren Hollingsworth, said the school was extremely proud of Eleanor’s achievements.

“Fencing has really taken off here at Oswestry and it is hugely encouraging when a pupil’s talent is recognised at such a high level outside the school,” said Mr Hollingsworth.

“The Welsh Youth Foil was a warm up for Eleanor for the British Youth Championship Qualifiers and we wish her all the very best on that challenging weekend.”

Upper School

On entering the Upper School pupils make the subject choices for their two-year GCSE course. Most pupils choose nine subjects of which Mathematics, English and one Foreign Language are compulsory, unless there are special circumstances. This ensures a broad base of study, enabling quality learning of a range of skills and knowledge.

That being said, teaching staff are acutely aware of the importance of maintaining a flexible balance between prescribed workloads and the pupils’ capability to manage them. Consistently excellent GCSE results suggest that maintaining a flexible approach to pupils’ individual needs and ability can ultimately produce results of which everyone can be proud.

A comprehensive careers advice service complements the GCSE course, in order that pupils and parents may make informed decisions about Sixth Form and Higher Education courses, as well as employment opportunities. An extensive Personal, Social and Health Education programme is overseen by the Head of Year and introduces pupils to a number of key issues they will face in modern life.

In addition to consultation on subject choices, pupils are encouraged to pursue their choice of physical education and games. They are also exposed to a wide range of extra-curricular activities, be they theatre and art excursions close to home or cultural trips further afield. Recent examples include visits to Northern Ireland, Berlin and Krakow, and an action and inspiration-packed journey to Kenya.

Middle School

The Middle School prepares and encourages pupils to aim for high academic achievements. In these critical years they are grouped by ability in some subjects, enabling them to progress at the most appropriate pace. Daily prep is set and closely monitored by form tutors and subject teachers.

Intellectual curiosity and good study habits are cultivated. Pupils also learn about themselves and their relations with others, and about the areas in which they can make a contribution in later life.

Class sizes are small and the teacher:pupil ratio is generous, permitting every individual to find the opportunity to excel. A broad curriculum of compulsory subjects is followed, including English, Mathematics and French, supplemented by Science subjects, History, Geography, Art, Music and Spanish. Technical subjects (including Information and Communication Technology and Design Technology), Religious Education and Physical Education are also available, plus a Personal, Social and Health Education programme.

Above all, pupils at Oswestry School will discover how to take responsibility for themselves and others in the knowledge that they have been set the right standards and goals.

Valentine's fun at Bellan House

Pupils from Oswestry’s Bellan House School enjoyed an early Valentine’s Day treat when a special café was set up in the school by parents.

The fundraising event was organised by the school’s Parents’ Association and held on the last day before the half-term break.

Bellan House headteacher Jackie Greatorex said: “During break time the pupils were able to visit the café and buy a cake for a friend which they then sat down and ate together – it was really fun for them and a nice way to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

“I was delighted to be taken to the café by one of our Reception children which was a very nice treat and the whole event proved to be a great success.

“Thanks to the tremendous effort by parents, the children brought in cakes to be sold in the cafe with many having a heart-shaped theme.

“The children are a bit young for the romantic side of Valentine’s Day but were really excited about the break-time treat.”

Mrs Greatorex said that the café looked wonderful and thanked the Parents’ Association for organising the event.

The school will be involved in another fundraising effort later this month when staff and pupils take part in a sponsored crocus walk to help combat polio.

Bellan House is joining forces with Oswestry Rotary Club on February 23 for the fundraising event in the town’s Cae Glas Park.

Mrs Greatorex said that the school had helped Rotary last year to plant 5,000 crocuses in the park to symbolise the End Polio Now campaign.

“During our sponsored walk we will hopefully be able to see the flowers in full bloom and will again be helping to raise funds for this excellent cause,” she said.
