  • 1405: Holbache Arms placed in the roof of the cloister of Canterbury Cathedral

  • 1407: Oswestry School founded by David Holbache and his wife Guinevere

  • 1577: Queen Elizabeth grants 40 shillings yearly towards the upkeep of the school

  • 1657: Cromwell directs the appointment of a headmaster to the school. Letter signed "Oliver P"(rotector)

  • 1660: Birth of Edward Lhuyd OO scientist

  • 1698: Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge est'd by Dr Thomas Bray OO

  • 1746: The Rev. Goronwy Owen, one of the greatest poets of Wales, becomes a master at Oswestry School

  • 1776: The new School House was built and the school moves to its present site

  • 1796: The Rev. Dr James Donne becomes Headmaster

  • 1856: Rev. Canon W A Spooner OO, 'spoonerism', enters school

  • 1863: School Chapel was built at a cost of £1,400 raised largely by subscription

  • 1885: Col Fred Burnaby OO is killed at Abu Klea. Organ installed in school chapel in his memory

  • 1890: Dormitory at Oswestry Grammar School

  • 1893: Robert Topham OO (front left) FA Cup Winner with Wolverhampton Wanderers

  • 1893: Robert Topham OO wins first of two England football caps.

  • 1896: 'St Oswald's Bath', completed by the boys. Water for the old pool was supplied from Oswalds Well

  • 1905: The ‘Old’ Science Lab, equipped by Rev Ambrose Short, is opened

  • 1905: Paddock showing new 'Old' Science Block the gift of R W Smale OO, designed by W H Spaull

  • 1907: The School's Quincentenary Celebrations with Archbishop of Canterbury, Spooner OO and Headmaster

  • 1907: The foundation stone of the new Cricket Pavillion is laid by Mrs Wynne Corrie of Park Hall

  • 1920: Postcard of Maes-y-llan. Note the flagpole and pupils. Oswestry and District Hospital not yet built

  • 1926: J G Parry Thomas OO, Welsh engineer and racing driver, twice breaks world land speed record

  • 1934: Charles Moses OO, General Manager of ABC 1935-1965, compiling one of the 'synthetic' cricket tests

  • 1947: The former Oswestry Cottage Hospital, designed by W H Spaull in 1869, becomes Holbache House

  • 1950: School v OO Cricket Match - Oswestry and District Hospital in Background (D. Tomley)

  • 1954: Opening of the Memorial Hall, in memory of the fallen in both Wars. Architect Douglas Hall OO

  • 1961: 'The Quarry', a house designed by architect Temple Moore (1863), becomes part of Oswestry School

  • 1972: Oswestry School becomes co-educational

  • 1975: Installation of Churchill monument by Ivor Roberts-Jones OO, Westminster

  • 1991: Portrait of Sir Bobby Charlton by Peter Edwards OO unveiled in the National Portrait Gallery
