OO Golf Tournament - Golf Captain's Report

Despite strong winds and heavy rain the OO golf day attracted 30 players, its largest field to date, fairly evenly split between Ladies and Gentlemen.

The conditions made the course about three shots harder than standard for gentlemen and around four for ladies - so if you scored three shots worse than your handicap it was a good score even if it did not feel like it!

Mile End was presented in excellent condition, with the greens running true and the course maturing nicely. Well worth a visit.

Gentlemen’s Results:

Holbache Trophy won by John Evans (handicap).

Willcox Financial Trophy by James Woodward (scratch).

Longest Drive by John Batchlor

The Team Champagne Challenge was won by the ‘Aberystwyth Assassins' led by Stuart Williams. Their best 3 Stableford scores per hole came to 120 points which is a tremendous score, well done.

Ladies' Results:

Guinevere Bowl won by Barbara Warner (handicap).

Freedom Equity Release trophy by Susan Evans (scratch).

The Team Champagne Challenge was won by Julie Potter’s team.

John Evans’ score was a matter of some concern on the 15th tee. He took a back swing, but as he started the downswing his ball fell off its tee and rolled towards him. John clearly pulled his club out of the way (as if leaving a ball outside the off stump in cricket) to avoid contacting a moving ball and incurring a penalty. The back swing had gone beyond shoulder height, but the intention was not to play a stroke. No penalty occurred and John was free to play the tee shot again. Any solicitors reading this would be well warned away from the rules of golf, as they make the laws of tort look like a walk in the park!

Thank you to everyone who attended and made it such a memorable day.

Best wishes
