Red Star Day for CCF

Oswestry School’s CCF (Combined Cadet Force) received Red Stars all round this month on completion of their basic training.  Members of Oswestry School Combined Cadet Force have been working toward gaining their Military Skills Proficiency Certificates.

This has included learning to use and fire the cadet rifle which is a direct descendant of the rifle used by the regular armed forces as well as map reading, drill and turnout, military knowledge and self reliance for 24 hours whilst on a military exercise at Nesscliff training camp.  This is a long process and involves a lot of hard work for both the cadets and also the staff who enable them to gain the skills necessary to qualify.  The cadet force parades on a Thursday afternoon and teaches its members life skills such as teamwork and problem solving as well as skills that relate directly to the armed forces.

The unit also holds 3 field days a year where cadets learn to live in a tactical situation for 24 hours whilst conducting activities such as patrolling as well as one range day a year where cadets test their marksmanship skills which can lead to further awards.  3 of the cadets pictured have recently gained their 1st class shooting awards as well.

One cadet Martha Twigg has also gained her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award which is operated as part of the cadet syllabus as well as the Summer Mountain Proficiency Award which enables her to take part in any summer based British Expedition anywhere in the world should she wish to apply to take part.

The Cadet movement focuses on developing young people's personal qualities and encourages individuals to succeed in a structured organisation that rewards hard work and commitment.
