Tuesday 13th February
Lower and Middle School

Sponsored Swim (Pool) 1.00-3.00pm

58 young swimmers from Lower and Middle School today took part in a sponsored swim in aid of 3 charities.  Sixth former and School Captain of Swimming Alfred Leung came along to the first session to lend his support and get the event off to a good start.

Each swimmer had half an hour in the pool to swim as many lengths as possible in that time.  Records of the number of lengths swam were ably kept by members of the Rotary Club of Oswestry who acted as poolside stewards for the afternoon.

Terry Roberts, the school swimming coach, and Matthew and Hamish, our gap students, kept order in the pool.

And now for the statistics . . . .

  • the total number of lengths swum was 2,482!
  • the total distance swum was 49.6km!
  • each swimmer swam an average of 42 lengths, that is around 840m!

To put that into perspective, in their half hour, each swimmer swam, on average, TWICE the height of the Empire State Building in New York!

Congratulations and thanks to all those who took part and assisted on the day.

The three charities to benefit from this event will be Barnardo's, The Wheelchair Foundation and Leap South Africa, the charity in South Africa for whom Mr Duffet, former teacher at Oswestry School, is now working in South Africa.

Now all you have to do is collect your sponsor money and bring it all into school by Friday 2nd March.
