Oswestry School 600 Event

Launch Reception, Oswestry Visitor and Exhibition Centre 6.30pm

Oswestry School today launched its year of celebrations to commemorate its 600th birthday!  Follow this link to see a video report from the Shropshire Star about the launch exhibition - Oswestry School Celebrates - Shropshire Star - Video

A reception in the Heritage Centre, the original site of Oswestry Grammar School in 1407, was held to get the year off to a good start and in particular launch Art 600.  Featuring work by present pupils and several OOs including renowned portrait painter Peter Edwards, Art 600 showcases the important works received by the school from the Ivor-Roberts Jones bequest and will be open during January.

Here we see guest Owen Paterson, MP for North Shropshire talking with former Latin master and Director of the Recital Series, Chris Symons.

The other image shows graffiti in the old building where bygone scholars carved their names into the beams; truly a link with our long history.

Oswestry School moved from here to the Upper Brook Street site in 1776 - read Chris Symons' short introduction to the history of the school by following the History link left or by clicking here.  Chris is currently putting the finishing touches to his new book setting down the history of the school, which will be available within the next few months.
