The Guest of Honour at Oswestry School Speech Day and Prizegiving was the Mountaineer Jo Gambi, renowned for the fastest female ascent of the ‘Seven Summits’ (the highest mountains on all seven continents) and for being the first woman to have skied to both the North and the South Poles. What makes her story even more remarkable is that she achieved all this with her husband Rob, while he was in remission from his second bout of cancer.
Explaining that she had not been a particularly high achiever while at school, Jo encouraged her audience not to be put off by obstacles and apparent failures. She praised the fantastic resources and teachers at Oswestry School as she commented on the wealth of achievement of the pupils. “Each one of you has unique talents and skills,” she said. “The secret of success is to follow what’s in your heart. Where you look in life is where you go; what you focus on is what you become. It is important that you pick the right team to be part of.”
This theme was echoed in the speeches of Head Girl Alice Parker, Head Boy Tristan Hartey and Oswestry School 600 Prefect Nathaniel Gliksman as they encouraged younger pupils to be ready to move outside their comfort zones and take the opportunities which the School offers. “Oswestry School gives everyone the chance to shine,” said Alice, “The key is to get involved.”
After the ceremonies, parents and guests were invited to view the impressive exhibition of students’ artwork.
