Thursday 9th November
MFL Conference and Masterclass

A small group of Year 11s along with three Year 10s spent the day at an MFL Conference for Gifted and Talented students at the Festival Drayton Centre in Market Drayton with Mrs Chidlow.

We took part in sessions aimed at improving the language skills we already had in French and/or German but also learning the basics of new languages we hadn't studied before such as Italian and Chinese.  As well as learning about the main language we looked at different cultures and French slang.

At lunch we had the chance to sample food from different parts of the world which was definitely one of the best parts of the day.

Another interesting part was when we heard about all the benefits of knowing more than one language, for example if you only speak English there are three quarters of the world you can't communicate with!  However, my most favourite bit of the day was learning Chinese and Italian; they made the sessions really fun and it made me want to learn all these different languages.

The whole day definitely made me very keen to carry on studying French and to learn more languages.  All in all, it was a fantastic experience and I would like to thank Mrs Chidlow for taking us and making the day even more enjoyable!

Pupils from Years 10 and 11, who have shown ability in MFL, have been selected by the MFL Department to attend a Conference and Masterclass for 'Gifted and Talented' linguists at The Grove School, Market Drayton.

The aim of the day will be to give these students the opportunity to attend sessions in German, French and Spanish, and extend their understanding of the target language countries, as well as support their Key Stage 4 studies in preparation for GCSE.  The day will also offer an insight into the importance of foreign languages for future career prospects and to hopefully encourage further language study at Key Stage 5, ie in the Sixth Form.

Students will be travelling by minibus, leaving school at 7.30am for a prompt 8.30am start!  The day will close at 3.30pm.  Pupils will be back at school for 4.30pm.
