BCU Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Paddlesport Course

Liam Chambers and Katy Yates (Year 13) have spent the last two weekends learning how to coach paddlesport on a course run by Shropshire Paddlesport at Oswestry Canoe Club near Queens Head.  Liam and Katy only need to take the Foundation Safety and Rescue Test to achieve the full award.

"The Level 1 Award is for those new to paddlesport coaching. The qualification is not discipline specific and is therefore suitable to coaches who wish to work with paddlers from any of the competitive and non-competitive paddlesport disciplines.  The Level 1 coach can plan, deliver, and review short coaching sessions: normally with the support of a more qualified coach.  They can work with paddlers at any stage of development: receiving specific training to coach paddlers in their first year of activity and to run taster sessions."

BCU Level 1 Coaching Pathway

Katy has already achieved her BCU 2 Star Award on the Open Foundation Course this summer on a CCAT course with the CCF at Dingwall near Inverness.

This half term, many of our CCF cadets are travelling up to Halton, near Lancaster, to undertake a variety of CCAT courses, including Summer Mountain Proficiency and Rock Climbing.  Katy is hoping to take the Inland Kayak Progression Course with a view to attaining her 3 Star Award and Liam is aiming to achieve his 2 Star Award.

Some of Oswestry School's recently purchased kayaking equipment was used on the course; many thanks to those who made this purchase possible including the Mary Hignett Bequest Fund.
