The School’s Chess Club has rounded off a splendid year with participation in the UK Land Chess Challenge, now the world’s largest chess competition with around 75,000 competitors. Last term we played the school-based rounds, as a result of which four players (Richard Herbert, Richard Christie, George Tomley and Sam Skubala) qualified for the regional Megafinal in Hereford. .
The Megafinal welcomed around 200 players from a large area of Wales and the English border counties. Competition was keen and three of our players, Richard, Richard and George played around the mid-level of the tournament. Sam Skubala was more successful still, scoring 4 out of 6 points and qualifying for the next stage of the tournament, the Northern semi-final (called the Gigafinal), in Manchester, which will take place in July. We wish him every success!
