U15 v Wrekin College (h) 2pm

The Under 15s played Wrekin College today and I can thankfully say that we have added another win to our tally this season. Wrekin College boasts county standard players and are a well known tough and skilful side.

The lackadaisical attempts from the team in Tuesday’s practice were the after effects of the half term but this proved to wear off overnight. Wrekin arrived (15 minutes late) but nevertheless ready for a challenging 25 overs of cricket.

The coaching staff and captain were indecisive about what to do if we won the toss, as the weather was perfect for batting but on the other hand Oswestry have a very bad record batting first. Oswestry won the toss and elected to field so James Anderson and Callum Morris headed the bowling attack, hoping for an early wicket.

As planned, James bowled on the dot and at the other end Callum bowled 3 wickets for 17 runs. Special mention must go to Max Payne for a truly spectacular catch and Joe Jones for his first but hopefully not last run-out of the season. After 10 overs the College had only scored 32 off an impressive 4 wickets and so on came the first change bowlers. Max Payne and Douglas Williams kept the middle order at bay whilst gradually taking the odd wicket. Wrekin were bowled out for 51 which was only possible with the high fielding standards the team set themselves.

Focusing on the job in hand, Callum Morris and Douglas Williams marched towards the crease hoping for a quick end to the match. The openers reached 20 before the tea break just after Douglas hit his first boundary. After tea, Callum decided to hit out and hit 2 sixes at the end of the over. This prompted Douglas to try and repeat the shot over mid-off but was caught on a respectable 13. Ricardo came in and took 2 overs to ‘get himself in’. Callum and Ricardo scored the remaining few singles and Oswestry won the match by 8 wickets.

Man of the match to Douglas Williams for his well-deserved all round performance.
