World Book Day is marked in an amazing 100 countries around the globe and is continuing to spread; but where, you may wonder, is the origin of this tradition?

Catalonia, Spain is the home of World Book Day.  To celebrate St George’s Day (the patron saint of Catalonia) the people gave a book and a rose to their loved ones. This started the famous tradition of World Book Day.

The spokesperson for World Book Day and the European Book Federation president John McNamee stated, “A love of reading is the greatest gift you can give a child as it opens up endless possibilities and opportunities. Every child, regardless of background or disadvantage, should be properly nurtured in the foundation skill of reading.”

2008 will mark 11 years of helping to entice people in 100 countries around the world into reading, literacy, and a love of books.
