1st XV, U15 v Wolverhampton GS (h) 2.15pm
U15s Won 22-21
A newly disciplined side took to the field for its first fixture of the season against Wolverhampton Grammar School. The lessons and experiences of the players after the previous two seasons and the tour to Scotland last March have helped to round a squad that played with flair and determination for the first half of the match. A smooth linking of passes as well, as good support running, led to a try from Adam Lloyd just 1 and a half minutes into the game although he angle of the conversion proved too much for Callum Morris. Further excellent passages of play which demonstrated a unit working together saw a further unconverted try, once again by Adam Lloyd, after 14 minutes with Joe Jones sneaking a try from the back of the scrum just before half time which Callum Morris successfully converted. Oswestry could well have been 4 more tries ahead had the support running been more committed.
The second half saw a more determined approach by Wolverhampton which led to their scoring a converted try in the 3rd minute of the half which was assisted by some silly mistakes by Oswestry. A lack of support and determination from the Oswestry team along with the over reliance on key players saw the side making hard work for itself throughout the half. There were, however, times that demonstrated a real improvement in technique from the Oswestry back line with some fluid passing which resulted in Oswestry’s only try, and indeed points, of the half. The team had to defend stoically against a Wolverhampton side whose confidence grew with every minute leading to their scoring a further 2 converted tries in the 20th and 27th minutes. The scores at 22-21 in Oswestry’s favour saw a nail biting last 2 minutes as Wolverhampton were tenacious in trying to clinch a last second win whist Oswestry fought with equal determination to keep their slim lead. A final drive from the Oswestry forwards saw them drive a held Wolverhampton forward out of the field of play in the 31st minute ending the game and giving a first game win to Oswestry.
