Brooke Receives Award from Birmingham City Council

Congratulations to Brooke Simons-Akwah, of the Upper Sixth, who has received an award from Birmingham City Council in recognition of her achievements in her local community.  Here Brooke tells us what that has involved.

"I have been a member of the United Kingdom Youth Parliament (UKYP) since being elected by my peers in Birmingham, in January 2007, to represent the views, concerns and ides of young people living in my constituency.

I have represented the young people of Birmingham locally within the City, regionally across the Midlands and nationally through convened forums.

Facilitating events and workshops with Save the Children attended by Hilary Benn and other MPs, I have also consulted with MPs and Councillors on issues affecting young people in contemporary society, such as SRE and our campaign for free buses for under 18s.

As well as UKYP, I am also a key member of SCAWDI Youth Forum and do youth work/volunteer at local youth groups, helping with events and helping to raise money via funding applications and fundraising."
