As part of the continuing celebrations of its 600th anniversary, Oswestry School will be taking part in Heritage Open Days 2007 by providing the opportunity to visit many of the historic buildings on our campus..
Heritage Open Days celebrates England's fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission. Every year on four days in September, buildings of every age, style and function throw open their doors, ranging from castles to factories, town halls to tithe barns, parish churches to Buddhist temples. It is a once-a-year chance to discover hidden architectural treasures and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities which bring to life local history and culture.
The Open Day will begin at 10.00am in the Peter Humphreys Centre and at 10.30am, Chris Symons, who has recently published an extremely readable history of the School, will give a talk looking back over the last 600 years to the time of the School's founder David Holbache, and his friend Owain Glyndwr. Visitors will then visit School House (1776) and will also be invited to the School's Chapel, dedicated on St Andrews Day 1863 when the service was attended by Old Oswestrian, The Rev. Canon W A Spooner of 'spoonerism' notoriety.
Following the morning at School, visitors will be encouraged to go to the Oswestry Visitor and Exhibition Centre, formerly The Heritage Centre, the timber framed building nestling next to the Parish Church in Oswestry, which was the original site of the school in 1407.
