Bronze Award Assessment

Fourteen year 10 students have undertaken the award at this level this year and after 2 weekends intensive training in Llangollen during the summer term undertook the final assessment for this element in the last week of term in the Church Stretton area of the Long Myndd.

The 3 groups of between 4 and 5 students members each were given an area to work in and spent several lunchtimes planning the route they would travel over during the 2 day expedition.  They were then dropped off at Plowden which is sat the base of the Long Myndd and set off on their respective journeys.  They encountered changeable weather with rain being the main component of the first day, spirits remained high and one group was seen singing happily as they traversed their route.  The groups finished down Carding Mill Valley before the 3 tired groups walked to their campsite in the scenic Ashes Hollow just above Little Stretton.

The second day saw a large amount of sunshine as the groups set off at times set by themselves in order to finish at Stiperstones for 2pm.  The teams found the initial pull back over the Long Myndd hard work as they reawoke aching limbs from the previous days exertions but spirits remained high.  The groups all finished within 15 minutes of each other and finished wet due to it belting down with rain at 1 minute passed 2 – well they were told to finish by 2pm.

The groups are now preparing presentations on their expedition in an attempt to finish the Bronze shortly before Christmas so that they can then move onto the silver award.
