Saturday 19th September
Recital Series

The Tallis Scholars, Holy Trinity Church, 7.30pm

The opening concert in the Oswestry School Recital Series proved to be a suitably memorable musical occasion to mark the opening of the Twentieth Season. The capacity audience was treated to singing of the very highest order by the ten singers who comprise the Tallis Scholars, under their superstar director, Peter Phillips.

Following interviews in the afternoon for the ‘Early Music Programme’ on Radio 3, the choir sang a programme featuring some of the greatest choral music of the Sixteenth Century. Works by Tallis himself, Gesualdo, Gabrieli and Palestrina were treated to performances which allowed all their beauty and complexity to be brought out. The tonal blend, ensemble, clarity and precision were all matched by the Scholars’ exemplary attention to detail As might be expected under the direction of such an international authority as Peter Phillips, the singing throughout was suffused by a deep and total awareness and understanding of the style of that period. It was easy to appreciate why this group is generally regarded as the finest exponents of Renaissance singing in the world.

For most of the audience, the evening’s highlight was their matchless singing of the iconic setting by Allegri of the ‘Miserere’. The top C (sung off-stage) sent many a shiver up many a spine, and will long remain in the memory. (Click here to hear a recording of the piece by The Tallis Scholars.)

The choir members and Peter Phillips himself commented very favourably on the audience – its size and quality – and on how very pleasant they found the venue – Holy Trinity Church. With audiences regularly above 300, early purchase of tickets is recommended. The next concert – October 19th – features the acclaimed Pavel Haas String Quartet from Prague.
