1st VII vs Shrewsbury School
1st VII Netball v Shrewsbury School
This was the last game of the season for our 1st VII and with three players from the squad unavailable, we knew it was going to be a tough match.
We started well and the first quarter was fairly even with both sides working hard to maintain posesssion. We were unable to captilalise on all of our opportunities and Shrewsbury extended their lead to 8-3 at the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter the pace of the game increased and we passed with greater ease to allow Captain Sophie Yates to convert our chances. The possession was again fairly even with Shrewsbury having the edge and continuing to score at almost every opportunity. Shrewsbury continued to lead by five goals with the score 14-9 at half time.
In the third quarter, we continued to work hard in both attack and defence and Sophie Yates scored some excellent goals under pressure from a strong Shrewsbury defence. Holly Payne, a Year 11 who stepped into the team at the last minute also provided good support in the goal circle to provide allow Sophie to score. Shrewsbury led 20-14 at the end of this quarter.
We began the final quarter six goals down and knew we had to take every chance. Shrewsbury began to dominate and their strong defence denied us several chances. Shrewsbury continued to extend their lead and the game ended in a 29-20 defeat for us.
This was an exciting and well fought match. Although losing by nine goals, the team must take credit for their outstanding efforts throughout and for the way they adapted with three squad players missing.
Thank you all for your efforts this season girls. Myself and Mrs Willis have enjoyed it immensely.
Mrs Turner
