Speech and Drama Activities
Each year, Oswestry School's Music and English Departments stage a musical production. Recent years have seen performances of 'Fiddler on the Roof', “Les Miserables”, 'Guys and Dolls', 'Bugsy Malone' and “Oh What a Lovely War!” Pupils from all ages and abilities are encouraged to take part both on stage and behind the scenes.
The annual House Drama Competition provides an opportunity for the pupils themselves to produce and perform short pieces in competition between the houses.
Special days in the school's calendar, such as Founders Day, Christmas and Speech Day also provide the opportunity for pupils to sing and perform, either in the junior or senior choirs or in the Years 4 to 6 carol service.
All pupils in Years 5 to 8 enter the English Speaking Board (ESB) examinations. ESB promotes the practice and assessment of oral communication, spoken English and its fundamental importance to education. Each pupil prepares and delivers a short talk, prepares a memoried piece such as a poem or monologue and reads an extract from a book. These are then performed in front of some of their own classmates and an external examiner from the ESB. Every pupil in the group is encouraged to take part in a question session following each talk, thereby demonstrating listening and responding skills, as well as their own competence as a speaker. All pupils taking part in an ESB assessment become fully involved, both in presenting their own material and as a member of the audience. Both aspects are assessed and credited and go towards the pupil's final grade. Once they reach Year 9 pupils have the opportunity to continue with these exams and can take them as high as Senior proficiency and Advanced level whilst in the Sixth Form. These last two exams give them valuable UCAS points towards their university application.
Younger pupils in the school also take part in a local poetry and prose festival. They get great enjoyment and a sense of achievement from their participation and frequently win cups and medals. Pupils have also progressed to competitions at a national level such as reading from the Book of Common Prayer.
An increasingly popular opportunity for pupils, friends and staff to take part in is the Parents' Association 'Variety Night', during which monologues, comedy sketches, bands , solo instrumentalists and vocalists perform to a usually sell out audience in the PHC.
A full range of ballet, tap and drama lessons are available at Bellan House in association with the Stretton School of Drama and Dance. They also run a popular Summer School for boys and girls aged from 6 to13 years.
