Welcome from the Headmistress

JG_Work_Portrait__thmb.jpg
At Bellan House we believe that the development of the children in our care is the single most important thing in the world. As they come to us open and eager to learn, we nurture and cherish them as they explore their own completely individual abilities and talents in relation both to themselves and the world around them.

Truly the school with a heart in the heart of town, Bellan House combines a warm and caring family environment with a convenient central location. Staff and parents work closely together to ensure the children are happy so they can enjoy success in all areas of their lives.

With its long co-educational tradition, Bellan House offers small classes and specialist teaching in all areas, ensuring very high standards. Our close links with the Senior School extends the amenities available to the children and enables them to make a seamless transition when the time comes for them to move on.

Quite simply, we consider it a privilege to fulfil the trust parents place in us to walk alongside their children in this most important educational journey.

School Life

Staff at Bellan House believe that children should learn ‘not for school but for life’, the Oswestry School motto. They seek to help children in their social, moral, spiritual and cultural development as well as in their academic attainment. Bellan has strong links with local and national charities and there are regular focus days and fundraising events; in the last year, charities we have supported include the RNLI, Seeds for Africa and Children In Need. Our pupils also take part in local community activities such as carol singing in Red Square and the Heritage Centre. The school is proud of the high standards, both academic and social, which are achieved by pupils. All staff seek to foster in children social, moral, spiritual and cultural development as well as their academic attainment.

We have a very active music department and there are many opportunities throughout the year for the children to perform. The highlight of the year is our Summer Show, in which every child in the school takes part. Individual lessons in piano, violin, cello, guitar, trumpet, flute and clarinet can be arranged.

Individual lessons in piano, violin, cello, guitar, trumpet, flute and clarinet can be arranged. Children who wish to may join the school orchestra. The musical highlight of the year is our Summer Show, in which every child at Bellan takes part; the older children will also take part in the Senior School’s celebrations, such as Founder’s Day. Christmas and Harvest provide other opportunities for musical performance, as well as concerts throughout the year.

All pupils swim in the school pool each week and children from Years 3 and 4 enjoy games on the Maes-y-llan, Oswestry School’s large playing fields, once a week. The Bellan House Sports Day and Swimming Gala are very enjoyable occasions and take place on the Senior School site. Minibus transport is provided to transfer the pupils between sites.

After school clubs are available to all pupils and start after lessons at the end of the day. The sports clubs take place on the Senior School site. There are a huge variety of clubs available including an excellent range of Performing Arts activities.

There is also a ‘waiting room’ at Bellan House, where children may complete their homework. The Year 5 & 6 children may attend ‘Prep’ sessions at the Senior School in order to complete their ‘Prep’ after lessons.

The school’s ‘Wrap–around’ provision is provided by ‘Prepcare’ and provides before school care from 8:00am in the morning and after school care until 6:00pm.
