Junior chess club tactics reach national level

The prep department, Bellan House has a thriving chess club which has started competing in national competitions. Hamish Coutts-Britton (Year 3) and Ben Tidridge (Year 4) accumulated points to reach the regional megafinal of the Delauncey UK Schools chess challenge held in Worcester recently.

KS1 revel in activities at Attingham Park

Key Stage 1 pupils visited Attingham Park this week. The children enjoyed a fun filled day of activities.

It was with great pleasure that Oswestry School welcomed members of the Leondari ensemble as they prepared and rehearsed parts of their considerable project presenting all of Brahms chamber works over one week of concerts.

Sixth Former to take part in Global Young Leaders Conference

Matthew Masters has been selected amongst students from all over the world by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council to take part in the prestigious ‘Global Young Leaders Conference’ this summer.

The Oswestry eagle has landed

Oswestry School has been one of the first to adopt a giant metal sculpture as part of the Oswestry Urban Safari Trail the sculpture. The magnificent “Eagle” which stands at circ. nine feet tall on its specially designed plinth has been provided by the British Ironworks Centre. The eagle is situated close to St Oswald’s Well on the School site by Oswald’s Well Lane.

Year 6 take part in Lake District Field Trip

Year 6 have travelled to Blencathra Field Studies Centre in the Lake District for a week to develop their understanding of aspects in the Geography and Science curriculum. The Field Centre is set in the South West side of Blencathra Mountain and offers a great panorama of pastures, valleys, streams and lakes. It is hoped that this setting will provide interest and inspiration to the pupils and provide them with an opportunity to develop teamwork skills.

Silver Duke of Edinburgh preparation expeditions completed

Twenty Fifth Formers completed their training expeditions for Duke of Edinburgh's Silver Award over the Easter and recent May Day Bank holiday. Please read on for an account of both of these expeditions.

A record number of families visited Oswestry School for the Prep Department's May Open Morning.

New addition to the 'Gappie Team'

The start of the Trinity term brought Kayla Bates from Eastern Australia (Mackillop Senior College, Port Macquarie) to join David, Lara and Angus. She will be here until the end of the Michaelmas Term and is working at both the Senior and Bellan sites. When she returns to Australia she will be entering the field of medicine at university.

Musical achievements in recent exams

The results are in for the recent Trinity and ABRSM exams across a range of disciplines. The first group examined were those applying through Trinity College London.

'35 Years Exhibition' Celebration

In 1978 Bellan House School became part of Oswestry School. To mark this 35 year milestone, Oswestry School Prep Department will be holding a celebration Time for Tea and '35 Years Exhibition' at Bellan House on the 7th June at 3.00pm

Year 1 delight in string opportunity

Year 1's very much enjoy their weekly violin sessions with Mr Oram, our string specialist, as part of their music curriculum this year. The group sessions are the ideal preparation for individual learning opportunities, next term.

This year's public speaking took place on Friday 26th April as it had been postponed due to snow last term.

South African Cricket Coach arrives

Oswestry School is delighted to welcome a cricket coach from South Africa. Ryan Fynn, who lives just outside Port Elizabeth in a small village called St Francis Bay, arrived at the beginning of the term and is helping with the 1^st XI and U11 squads. This is the second year the school has hosted a cricket coach from South Africa.

Ten Italian pupils and their group leader are at Oswestry School for a week to integrate with the 1st and 2nd Form experiencing life and culture at a British school.
