Snowsports Aosta 2012
The annual fun-filled Easter holiday trip to Aosta/Pila in Italy was, yet again, a great success. Snow conditions improved by the day, with overnight and morning snowfalls producing amazing pistes and spectacular Alpine views, including Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn.
Each of the skiing/snowboarding groups made good progress under the skilful and expert guidance of excellent instructors. There was great satisfaction that Year 11 pupils Matteo O’Mahoney and Jamie McMurray were highlighted and filmed as potential participants in the INTERSKI scholarship awards 2012.
The centrally located Hotel Roma provided superb rest, repose and meals for the tired and hungry, with renowned hostess Graziella ‘Corleone’and her delightful staff keeping a watchful eye on everyone!
An enjoyable après-ski evening programme of activities included ice skating, snooker/pool competitions, participation in a disco with 16 other UK schools that were staying in resort, a delicious dinner at a local restaurant and an end of week awards evening, celebrating each participant’s individual achievement. Entertaining speeches were made by pupils and instructors and ‘thank you’ presents gratefully received.
Special mention must be made of the five careful and efficient coach drivers who safely navigated the party from Oswestry to Italy and back, amidst some angst about coach travel safety. The group was somewhat spoiled by having a double seat each on the outbound journey; not so on the return.
The group was met and joined on several occasions by current Deputy Head Boy, Year 13 student Oliver Newman, who was training to BASI 2 level through the Interski scholarship scheme, and by Callum Morris, OO 2011, who was training to be a skiing instructor through the Interski Gap Year programme.
Many thanks for running the trip to Miss James, Mr Miles, Mrs Chidlow and OOs Harrison and Tristan Chidlow, whose wit and sense of humour kept everyone entertained.
Places for Easter 2013 have already been reserved. Please contact Mrs Chidlow for more information.
