Outstanding Speakers

On Saturday March 31st Oswestry School’s Public Speaking team, consisting of Georgina Mercer, Joe Collinge and Chris Jones, competed in the National Finals of the BPW Public Speaking competition.

The team had already done well in reaching the finals, defeating local rivals and previous winners Moreton Hall and Concorde College on the way. Our team knew that it was going to be a very tough final as teams such as Colchester Royal Grammar and Kilkeel High School from Northern Ireland had reached the finals on four separate occasions. For the Oswestry team this was very much uncharted territory.

Undaunted though our team rose to the challenge and performed magnificently on the day. This resulted in the team being declared runners up on the day and awarded the Anne Simms Trophy. As well as this magnificent team performance Joe Collinge was awarded The Elizabeth Peacock Trophy by the judges for outstanding speaker of the competition. This trophy is awarded to the speaker who, in the words of the judges, is the “most gifted and talented speaker and who adds something exceptional to the competition.”

This was a fitting end to the team’s endeavours this year and completed a tally of five trophies won by the team this year.
