EAL International Pupils and EAL Lessons

eal300.jpg
Oswestry School welcomes pupils from all over the world and offers language and study skills support for pupils for whom English is not their first language.

The EAL department consist of qualified teachers with many years’ experience teaching English to speakers of English as an acquired language (EAL) both in this country and abroad.

Assessment and support

We assess the new pupil’s language level on arrival in the school. We then work towards providing all EAL pupils with the skills he/she needs to study effectively in English.

External exams

Depending on their age and language level, pupils are entered for a series of internationally recognised external exams

Cambridge ESOL (www.cambridgeesol.org)

Oswestry School is an open centre for Cambridge ESOL exams. Pupils have the opportunity to take two exams:

The Preliminary English Test (PET) Council for Europe Language Level B1

First Certificate in English (FCE) Council for Europe Language Level B2

IGCSE

EAL pupils in year 11 take the Edexcel International GCSE (IGCSE) in English as a Second Language.

IELTS

Pupils in years 12 and 13 are prepared for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam, an entry requirement for UK universities and for many universities in other English-speaking countries.
