The new Season – our 22
nd – of the Oswestry School Recital Series was launched in glorious style by one of the most sought-after string quartets in the UK – the Elias Quartet. These four young players – two sisters from Perpignan, France, a Swede and a Scot – performed before an audience of over 300, and the highly enthusiastic applause which followed their playing quite properly rewarded the brilliance of their performance. Of course, impeccable intonation, ensemble and formidable technique one takes for granted in quartets at this international level: the ‘extras’ that marked these players out was their interpretative thoughtfulness and insight, and their ability to create atmosphere and colour. The intensity and concentration evident in the audience’s listening bore clear witness to this.
