Despite being known for other attributes the following sports personalities use their foreign language skills: Roger Federer can speak four languages fluently as well as being a tennis champion. Jonny Wilkinson plays top class rugby and speaks French as he plays for Toulon Rugby Club. Paula Radcliffe, the long distance runner speaks French and German which she uses when competing in Europe and David Beckham learnt Spanish while playing football for Real Madrid.
Diane Modahl (former Olympic athlete) has said “I know lots of people speak English, but being prepared to say something in someone else’s language is a way of showing them that you care, that you are prepared to make the effort and you don’t just expect them to speak your language. That’s quite arrogant actually, isn’t it?”
Further on the sports theme, Match of the Day presenter and former England great, Gary Lineker said “As the world gets smaller, there’s never been a better opportunity to get into languages.”
