Oswestry School’s Art Department is pleased to announce its first annual art competition supported by Peter Edwards OO.
The Dinner was held at the Wynnstay Hotel and, although numbers (78) were down on last year (123), the event was highly enjoyable. I have received some very positive feedback and comments.
During December 2009 and January 2010, Oswestry Library is the venue for Edward Lhuyd: A touring exhibition by The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth.
I am writing to the Old Oswestrians about our 200 Club. This is a scheme whereby people pay £40 per year for membership, and half the proceeds go to the Parents' Association to be spent on projects around the School, and the other half is returned to the members in the form of 10 prize draws per year.
The annual Old Oswestrian Society Founder’s Day Dinner was held at The Wynnstay Hotel, Oswestry yesterday. The guest speaker was Alan Tritton CBE, DL, who is a descendent of Colonel Burnaby, our celebrated old boy.
OO Football Victory
School was defeated by a squad made up from school teams of old at the weekend. Traditionally the Old Boys’ game is always a fun event and it was no different this year with many of the OO’s commenting on the good natured spirit in which the match was played.
Although School played some quality football at times, they could not stop the Old Boys side from scoring.
Great game with OOs winning 7-2. Dave Lancaster lifts the new OO challenge shield!

Dear Old Oswestrian Society
I am writing to you from Sri Lanka where I am opening a school in January 2010 to help the marginalised and impoverished tea-picking communities through providing a free one-year diploma in professional English, Business and IT. These skills are necessary if they are to find a way out of the back-breaking generational servitude that they were pressed into by the British Empire some 150 years ago. The school will also deal with underlying social issues and promote peace and reconciliation between the ethnic groups at the end of the 26-year civil war.
You may have seen it on the News this morning; The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford has undergone a £61m transformation and opens its doors to the public again this weekend. The Ashmolean is one of the great museums in the world, and can lay claim to be Britain's first official museum. Indeed, at the time of its founding, the term "museum" was unknown.
Writer, Urban Shaman and Old Oswestrian John Constable is very involved in the community and history of Southwark, London where he now lives. In a recent communication from him he invites us to find out more about Cross Bones Graveyard, a forgotten corner of SE1. Also known as The Red Gates, this mediaeval burial ground, near London Bridge, is the final resting place of hundreds of the capital's paupers and prostitutes from the 'stews' of Bankside known as 'Winchester Geese'.
Stephen Lloyd 1968 – 2009
We are sad to announce the premature death of Steve Lloyd, formerly of Pentre Farm, Bronygarth. He passed away peacefully on 6th March this year, following a bravely fought short battle with cancer.
Seem to have had a breakdown in communications since being back in UK for the big one in 2007. Did I forget to pay my OO subscription . . . . . again? (
Email newsletter to members imminent – update your details now – Hon Sec) I had a wonderful time in London and Oswestry during the 600 celebrations. There were great memories and it was wonderful to meet so many old friends.
At the Old Oswestrian Society AGM, due to the increasing costs of printing and postage, it was decided not to produce OO Newsletters in printed form any more and it was agreed that the next OO Newsletter will be published in an electronic version and not a printed version.
Congratulations to William Hung 00 (2002-2008) who graduated from the Hong Kong Police Training College on September 26
th 2009.
One of the Year 13 students who was not at school yesterday to receive their A level results was Victoria Bateman who left for Australia earlier this month to start her GAP year at
All Saints' College, Bathurst, NSW.
Charlotte Hartey, who had been a pupil at Oswestry School since Bellan House, had just completed her Year 11 studies when, tragically, she passed away on 31st July 2009.
The school was deeply shocked and saddened by the death of Charlotte. It is always especially sad when someone so young with a bright future is suddenly plucked away from her family and friends in such manner. She will be sorely missed by everyone at the school and our heartfelt sympathies go out to the family who are very much in our thoughts and prayers.
Congratulations to Wisely Chau, Head Girl 2005-6, who graduated on Saturday 11th July 2009 with a BA (Hons) in International Communications Studies with Spanish from the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China (UNNC).

The annual OO golf competition took place on July 3
rd at Mile End Golf Club. The weather was kind, the competition fierce and the fellowship much enjoyed.

Jacob Tidridge's invitation to Charles Darwin's 200th birthday party on February 12th, a suggestion that Darwin's nephew, Charles Parker, came to Oswestry School has been confirmed by information passed onto the website by the Llewellyn family (Tom Year 13). However, it seems that there may actually have been four Parker boys at school. Here are more details.
