Recital Series Esbjerg Ensemble, Holy Trinity Church, 7.30pm

The second concert in the Oswestry School Recital Series was greatly enjoyed by a large audience in Holy Trinity Church. The Esbjerg Ensemble from Denmark were on a UK tour, which ended with a concert in London's Cadogan Hall.

The twelve players - essentially a string quintet plus wind quintet, piano and percussion - presented a very stimulating and varied programme of old and new, beginning with a work by a little known composer, Farrenc. Although beautifully played and delicately and expertly scored, this Nonet was perhaps just a little lacking in real musical depth or inspiration, and its reception was polite but muted! However, the same could not be said about the wonderful Poulenc Septet for Wind and Piano which followed. Its racy rhythms, lush French harmonies and unusual textures made for a winning performance.

Following the interval, a contemporary Danish work provided some interesting food for thought and discussion. Atmospheric in the extreme, its folksy Scandinavian feel was not immediately to everyone's palate, and others felt that the limited material was stretched beyond what was merited. However, it is always good to experience something modern, and test it: after all, Mozart was ‘modern' to his contemporaries!

The final work was greeted rapturously by the whole house. Schumann's great Piano Quintet was given a superb outing: matchless ensemble, thoughtful interpretation and some exhilarating playing created a perfect finale for what had been an excellent evening.

The next concert in the Recital Series features one of our most well-known and admired violinists, Tasmin Little. After a first half of unaccompanied violin (including a Bach Sonata) she will be joined by Christopher Symons (piano) for Brahms' G major Sonata. Then will follow what Tasmin describes as some ‘musical fireworks'!
